Malawi, a small gem of a country, lies
landlocked in southeast Africa, with Lake Malawi taking up about a fifth of the
landscape. David Livingstone arrived on the lakeshore in 1861 and graphically
described its beauty in his journal. Of all the African countries Malawi's
geography is most sculptured and determined by the Great Rift Valley. The
countries habitat and scenery is varied to say the least, from towering
mountains to lush fertile valley floors and enormous crystal clear lakes. Eleven
national parks protect the diverse fauna and flora. Malawi offers culture in all
its complexity and beauty; with some of the friendliest people on the continent
it is no wonder that Malawi is known as "The Warm Heart of Africa."
