LA RESIDENCE, Franschhoek wine region,
South Africa
We suggest
2 or 3 nights here exploring the wine country and Cape
Town, as part of a Southern Africa itinerary.
There could not be a more appropriate setting for the
gorgeous La
Residence than the estate of Domaine des Anges in
Franschhoek, just
minutes from the village and its fine restaurants,
boutiques and galleries.
This is an area of
South Africa with a
history that dates back to the 1680's and the arrival of
the French Huguenots.
The meticulously maintained estate meanders through
tranquil vineyards bordered with olive trees, lemon and
orange orchards. Walks through the vineyards offer
stunning views of the valley and mountains. On
arrival at La Residence you are welcomed by the charming
hosts who oversee every detail of your stay. The
individually decorated suites are an ode to comfort and
meticulous attention to detail. During the winter months
all rooms have under-floor heating and at night become
cozy sanctuaries. In summer, they are deliciously cool
with sash windows and fitted shutters. There is a great
sensitivity to color and fabric; hues are rich Chinese
yellow brocade, muted rose pinks, Wedgwood green and
heavenly blues across the spectrum. During the harvest
season visitors to La Residence can assist in grape
picking, which is great fun and rewarded by a bountiful
harvest lunch! Meals too are a work of art, with
a plethora of creative salads, through to summer
candlelit evenings, alfresco dining and viewing the
stars with a glass of champagne. After
a leisurely dinner enjoy coffee and a movie in the
privacy of the library. Breakfast
is served on the terrace beside the pool.
During the day there are a host of activities and places
to visit, including private wine tastings or a visit to
the local cheese maker. Play tennis, golf or enjoy trout
fishing and horse riding through the vineyards or hot
air ballooning over Franschhoek. An
array of spa treatments are available in the privacy of
your own room or private balcony.
