Mombo Camp
is
situated on Mombo
Island, adjoining the northern tip of
Chief’s Island, and is within the Moremi Game Reserve in northern Botswana. The
camp is built under the shade of large shady trees and overlooks a wonderful
floodplain that teems with wildlife. The camp has nine comfortably furnished
luxurious tented rooms raised off the ground. The guest rooms and the walkways
that connect the rooms to the living area are up to 2 meters off the ground,
allowing animals to wander freely through and under the camp; at the same time
allowing for guest safety. The rooms are spacious and well appointed and have
en-suite facilities under canvas and an additional outdoor shower for those who
enjoy a shower under the stars. The dining room, pub and living area overlook
the open plain in front of the camp and there is a plunge pool for relaxing in
the heat of the day. Activities at Mombo include morning and afternoon game
drives in open 4x4 vehicles. The camp offers abundant wildlife viewing year
round, arguably the best in Botswana, including leopard, large herds of buffalo,
cheetah, wild dog, elephant, rhino, hyena, giraffe, rhino, wildebeest and zebra.
The highlight here is the concentrations of plains animals and big cats with
lion sightings particularly good. Access into this area is only by aircraft.
Mombo and Little Mombo were voted the Number 1 Resort in Africa in the 2009
Condé Nast Traveler (USA) Readers' Choice Awards. Both camps achieved a ranking
of 97.1 placing them at the number 10 slot on the Top 100 list - a list
described by the magazine as "... the hotels, resorts and cruise lines that
achieved near perfection!"
